The yielding

Posted by Simon Parke, 22 September 2017, 5.46am

And so finally, after all these years, to the yielding

Having stumbled through the wreckage of dissonance

This yielding to earth and heaven

To mercy, to others, to myself, to this moment

In some glorious exchange of pardon, things released, things forgiven

No more the imposition of my views

‘You will believe this! You will do that! Here’s how to be happy!’

Neither my charm nor my will seem to work any more

Nor my gift

They and I are quite overthrown, mere rubble now

And so I yield

No other path to choose or way to go - save despair, which begs one last hurrah

‘Remember the old ways, the old thoughts!’

And then cursing in rage: ‘You’ll never make it out of here!’

But I will, I’ll try, in a quiet yielding to emptiness, where no signs direct me this way or that

To a beyond - which is somehow in the middle of things.

To mercy itself, utter pardon, which frees all faults, both mine and yours

And makes them void

Releasing such room and space for other ways

A condition of complete simplicity

(Costing not less than everything)

The poet was right

Pierced by mercy, most days I glimpse eternity’s sunrise

But find the yielding expensive
