Uncomfortably numb

Posted by Simon Parke, 23 November 2018, 9.28am

I don’t know how some people survive

I don’t know how most people survive

We must close down to feeling, that’s probably how, and we may close down for years

We get on with things, don’t we, we keep going, keep the show on the road, imagine this is all there is - and really, it’s not bad considering

Numb becomes the norm, uncomfortable but manageable.

Some even applaud us. (They don’t realise.)

Though there comes a time when we just can’t continue, when body and spirit ask for release

And now feelings (if we can find them) must be taken out of the freezer and allowed to thaw

As painful as frozen hands in warm water, it’s a disturbing melting

And not always pretty

Though not a choice for those who wish to be free after all these years.
