Heard in Glastonbury high street, mother and small child:
Mother: Hurry up, Ronnie! We’re going to Jenny’s for lunch. You like going to Jenny’s for lunch.
Ronnie: No, I don’t.
Mother: Of course you do. Jenny’s lovely food, it’s different and it’s good for you, you like it!
Ronnie: No, I don’t.
Mother: Don’t be silly, you know you do.
Ronnie: No, I don’t.
Mother: And then afterwards, if you’re good, you can play with Luke, and you like Luke.
Ronnie: No, I don’t.
Mother: In their big garden… you like their big garden with the peace zone.
Ronnie: No, I don’t.
Pause.
Mother: Ronnie, hurry up – or we’ll be late for Jenny’s!
We’re not always heard.
We don’t always listen.
